IQUITOS

The city of Iquitos, Peru is home to over 450,000 people and is known as “The Capital of the Peruvian Amazon.” It is the largest city in the world that cannot be accessed by road. Because it is surrounded by the Amazon, Nanay, and Itaya rivers, the only access is through boat or plane. Iquitos is a metropolis area that thrives off industries such as timber, livestock, and mining as well as several different kinds of tourism-- Amazon tourism, drug tourism, and child sex tourism.

Although the city has luxuries such as universities, parks, a zoo, and a movie theatre, over seventy percent of the population of Iquitos lives in poverty. Contradictory to the mansions and beautiful tourism spots are pitiful huts and shacks often immersed in litter.

While city-life is the center of Iquitos, its outskirts and boat rides through the rivers take you into the Amazon Jungle. The jungle is home to tarantulas, monkeys, black caimans, jaguars, anacondas, and an astounding variety of other animals. It is also home to indigenous tribes, some of which are still uncontacted with the rest of the world. Certain illnesses are often found throughout this region such as Malaria and Dengue Fever. Natural flooding and heat waves can be a major problem due to the tropical rainforest climate.

Social problems rampant in Iquitos are gender discrimination, violence against women, illegal hunting and trading, pollution, drug use, prostitution, child sex tourism, and a street child epidemic.

The young men Kings and Queens International care for largely come from extreme poverty-stricken situations. In such cases of poverty, families (mostly single moms) cannot provide for their children and often become desperate. The eldest son (usually age 7-10) in the family is often forced to leave home and must fend for himself because a son has a better chance of surviving than a daughter does. This has led to a heartbreaking epidemic of "street boys" in Peru. In order to survive, these boys are forced into a life of prostitution and/or stealing. They are looked down on by locals and at times are even beaten by police. Society considers them worthless since they have been abandoned by their own mothers.

Your sponsorship allows former orphaned, abused, or abandoned boys who exit another orphanage program at the age of eighteen a better chance at life. It allows them to be given the opportunity to go to college or receive vocational training instead of being sent back to live on the streets of Iquitos without higher education or skills. Your donation goes to a variety of benefits for each boy, including a college education or vocational training, health care, shelter, and food. It also goes towards the salary of  Christian leadership who help disciple them.

It is our prayer that God will use these young men to be a light in their dark nation, breaking the cycles of poverty, abandonment, fatherlessness, and spiritual death. God is already using them in their nation in mighty ways, and we trust that He will continue to raise them up in His image. Thank you for your partnership in the Great Commission!
